Scoil Phádraig Naofa Kilcurry had their Active School Flag Launch Day on March 24th 2022. Organised by Ms McCoy, the whole day event allowed all the classes in the school the opportunity to get active throughout the day.
Junior and Senior Infants kicked off the day with a Letter Hunt around the extensive school grounds. For First and Second Classes, they had the opportunity to explore the new Active Walkway. Created by Ms McCoy and her Active Schools Team, this trail allows pupils of all ages to explore and develop a number of cross curricular skills.
As well as brushing up on their map reading, First and Second Class had the additional challenge of having to change movements between each control point so they hopped, skipped and ran their way around the route.
Third and Fourth Classes completed an Addition Walkway early in the morning before heading off to swimming- an Active day all around! The Fifth and Sixth Classes used the trail as a Mindfulness Walkway. With some members of these classes competing in the heat of a Gaelic Football Blitz at Roche Emmets during the day it was a more relaxing time for their contemporaries who had remained at school.
The Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland, and part of the National Physical Activity Plan. The ASF initiative provides schools with a framework to guide, support and incentivise them to work towards achieving a physically educated and physically active school community. Once awarded, ASF remains valid for a period of 3 years, after which time schools are invited to re-engage with the process. Scoil Phádraig Naofa Kilcurry are already a well established Green Flag School and this Launch Day was the opening whole school event on their Active School Flag journey.
